Benefits of learning languages by Belkisa Muço
Learning languages has been in the center of debate for a long time, due to its benefits. Knowing more than your mother tongue automatically brings many opportunities. However, it isn’t just about knowing something more, for job opportunities for instance, bur it is also about understanding and connecting with other cultures.
For starters, the most obvious argument that is mentioned during this debate, is having multiple job opportunities. Although, this comes along with crucial needs. For instance, it depends on the number of languages you know, or the job you are doing. The number of languages is understandable, but the job you are doing needs to come to account. For example, if you are a translator in a business, at least five languages are crucial.
While learning a language, you automatically learn aspects about their culture, however you should read it due to curiosity, and not take it as if an order. Whilst the language does separate a place from another, their culture does most of the work, but we don’t recognize it, since we don’t put as much thought into is. As far as I’m concerned, understanding other cultures helps you learn more of the language, such as metaphors connected with a tradition.
To sum up, learning a language is more than just memorizing rules, but it also opens doors for you that you probably didn’t know were there. The most important benefit in my opinion is understanding other cultures as it connects you with other people.
